My mother's dad dropped out of the eighth grade to work. He had to. By the time he was 30, he was a master electrician, plumber, carpenter, mason, mechanic. That guy was, to me, a magician. Anything that was broken, he could fix. Anybody anywhere in our community knew that if there was a problem, Carl was there to fix it.Mike Rowe

“God help me and my tools if I ever have to cut into one.”Direct quote from Dave in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a firefighter going through his bus extrication class.Know the horizontal black lines along the side of a school bus? These lines, known as rub rails, reinforce the chassis in a school bus and provide extra rigidity for impact absorption. There’s a shocking amount of structure there. But do they also serve as a direct map to emergency responders of where to cut in case of a crisis…It’s been said the bottom black line is the floor of the bus. The middle line is the seat line, and the top line is the top of these seats. As it turns out, due to the variation in school bus design and the fact that manufacturers are not required to follow strict placement guidelines for these rails, they don’t provide a consistent guide for where to cut.But while not directly crafted for emergency responders, could these rub rails still serve as an unofficial reference in the heat of a rescue?Have you found these lines to be helpful, or do you rely on other cues in these critical moments?#nightsticklighting #safety #firefightertraining #firstresponder

I’m curious, are you concerned about the use of Tek Screws in ductwork and damper installations?I’ve recently referred this back to BESA for further guidance. I know that some feel Tek screws shouldn’t be used – the theory being that if a fire breaks out the falling ductwork could pull the damper with it – causing a breach in the fire compartment.A traditional rivet has a lower melting point and some people I’ve spoken to feel it is less likely to disrupt the functioning of the breakaway joint.Does anyone know if controlled fire tests have been carried out to test Tek screws used in this scenario?#firesafety #fireinstallations #firedampers
