The only real problem here is the GC imposes an expiration date on a reward that the customer has earned.

I've been able to get my rewards back from MF on a returned item.

Its scammy in that I had to start a thread about it on TGP to hear many other people's bad experiences with it in order to avoid having one myself
So it's scammy because you can't scam it or don't understand it?

I thought the rewards were a Synchrony Bank thing. You'd need to call them to dispute any issue.
You are wrong if you’re referring to their “loyalty” program, but the card ”rewards” are though Sychrony.

Just like most other "Rewards" programs. They're frequent buyer coupons with fancy wording to make you feel like you're part of some sort of "club".

CA used to have a law eliminating expiration dates on most "rewards" like this, so I wonder if that applies to this GC program. Personally, I take every single GC discount, reward, or sale for what it is -- just a reduction in their profit on the item in order to establish the fiction that they are a "good deal!" retailer. Those "rewards" are carefully crafted to cost as little as possible, and to prompt the user to keep returning to GC, whether online or in person. The restrictions and limits built in to this "rewards" program are clearly intended to significantly reduce the actual cost of the program to GC. GC is about as musical as Costco or Walmart.

If the item is defective, all you have to do is ask if they don't offer it up front. They may if you ask nicely otherwise, as well.

Not quite. The rewards are given by synchrony - but GC can request synchrony to reinstate them

Those are a little different, as they’re dispersed by MF, and are earned on all purchases, not just those made on their credit card. They’re supposed to go back to your account in the event of a return.

Synchrony is the finance company. The GC/MF Rewards Points are a coupon program.
Credit card “rewards” like airline miles are a completely different thing.

As far as MF goes, I've always had my rewards added back when the refund was processed. Never had to ask. No idea how GC works, but from what I read here it seems to be different than MF. MF has their own rewards that they handle and GC rewards are supposedly through Synchrony.

Thanks for the info.
I haven't used MF since 2001, but the GC rewards are run by GC.. They are just created by what you spend using your Synchrony gear card.

The Gear Card Rewards, yes, are specific card rewards. I think that program was introduced back in 2016, IIRC, and they were set up on a 90-day expiration cycle Vs. Thats why I usually buy under the internal “loyalty” points program as it’s six months to use.

I almost always go with MF because I can get better discounts and they have better rewards. 8%, no matter how you pay. They're good for 6 months from your last purchase, so if you've got a bunch of rewards about to expire you can buy $2 worth of picks and you're good for another 6 months. As long as you buy something every 6 months, they'll never expire until you use them.

Good to know. I only knew about the card rewards from what I read in another thread here recently. Been years since I've been in a GC, so I have no idea what they offer these days.

I don’t know what he’s referring to, either. The only thing they offer are the gear card rewards.
